Course History
Welcome to Mahon Golf Course – Ireland’s first purpose made Municipal Golf Course. In 1978 Cork City Council commissioned Mr. Eddie Hackett to design an 18-hole golf course on the Mahon Peninsula. The official name for Mahon Golf Course is Ted McCarthy Municipal Golf Course. This was to be Ireland’s first purpose made Municipal Golf Course and was financially assisted by the Golfing Union of Ireland.
The project began in 1977 and was officially opened on the 3rd September 1980. It was initially a 9-hole layout with the course expanding over the next 6 years to become a full 18-hole golf course. In 1981 Mahon Golf Club was established and in 1982 the first recorded committee meeting took place in Cork City Hall. Holes 15 and 16 were rebuilt in the late 1990s due to the construction of Cork’s South Ring Road.
The new pavilion was constructed in and officially opened on the 19th January 2004. The course as it is now constituted proves a very challenging par 70 measured at 5300 metres.
Since 2020 The golf has renovated the 3rd, 8th, 9th and 10th tee boxes and continues plans on upgrading the golf course as well as the facilities on-site.
